November 23rd is a national holiday called Labor Thanksgiving Day.
11月23日は勤労感謝の日という国民の祝日です。

On this day, we show our gratitude to all the working people and their production.
この日、私たちはすべての労働者とその生産物に感謝の意を表します。

Originally, it came from an Imperial event called Niiname Sai.
元々は新嘗祭という皇室の行事に由来します。
The Emperor offeres the newly harvested rice of the year to gods.
天皇陛下がその年収穫された新米を神に捧げます。
After that, the Emperor also eats the rice and is grateful to the gods for the year's harvest.
その後、天皇陛下自らも新米を召し上がられ、その年の収穫を神に感謝します。

Needless to say, Labor Thanksgiving Day is not only for farmers.
言うまでもなく、勤労感謝の日は、農業従事者のためだけのものではありません。
Japan has poor natural resources and is often damaged by natural disasters, so labor and hard work are highly appreciated.
天然資源に恵まれず、たびたび天災に見舞われる日本では、勤労・勤勉は特に尊いものとされています。
