昔、織姫という機織りがいました。

A man named Hikoboshi was taking care of cows.
彦星という名の男性は牛の世話をしていました。
They were working hard, but after they fell in love, they became lazy.
二人は働き者でしたが、恋に落ちてからは怠けるようになりました。
This made the god so angry that he separated them across the Milky Way.
これが神の怒りにふれ、二人は天の川を挟んで離されてしまいました。
Now, they are allowed to see once a year at the night of July 7th if the sky is clear.
今では、二人は7月7日の夜、天気がよければ会うことを許されています。
People celebrate this day by decorating bamboo branches with strips of colorful paper called tanzaku.
人々は笹に色とりどりの短冊を飾りつけてこの日を祝います。
Their wishes are written on tanzaku.
