綱吉は大きな施設を作り、野犬を収容したり、
and ordered not to kill anything including mosquitos.
蚊さえも殺してはならぬ、と命じました。
People were so annoyed that they called him Dog Shogun.
民衆は困り果て、将軍綱吉を犬公方と呼びました。
In those days, a histrical incident happened.
そんな時代に、歴史的事件は起こりました。
At Great Pine Tree Hallway in Edo Castle,
江戸城、松の廊下で、
Asano, daimyo from Ako (Hyogo), took out a sword and attacked Kira, direct retainer of Shogun.
浅野内匠頭が刀を抜き、吉良上野介を切りつけました。
On that day, an Emperor's envoy was visiting Tsunayoshi
ちょうどそのとき、江戸城に天皇の使者が来ていたこともあり、
and Shogun got furious.
将軍綱吉は激怒。
He ordered Asano to have harakiri that day.
綱吉は、その日に浅野内匠頭に切腹を命じました。
After that, 47 samurai followers of Asano secretly prepared to revenge for their lord.
そののち、浅野内匠頭の家臣47人は主君のためひそかに復習を企てます。
The leader of the masterless samurai was Ohishi Kuranosuke.
浪士のリーダーは大石内蔵助。
Nearly two years had passed since so-called Great-Pine-Tree-Hallway Incident.
松の廊下事件から2年近くが過ぎていました。
At the night of Dec.14th,1702, they finally stormed into Kira's residence (in Sumida, Tokyo).
1702年12月14日の夜、ついに吉良邸を襲撃します。
No Ako samurai was killed in the two-hour fight.
二時間の死闘の末、一人の犠牲者も出すことなく、
They successfully beheaded Kira,
ついに、吉良の首を上げ、
rushed to Asano's grave at Sengakuji Temple (in Sinagawa, Tokyo) and offered the head to their lord.
主君の眠る泉岳寺に向かい、吉良の首を捧げました。
The following day, they turned themselves in to the police.
翌日、浪士たちは出頭。
But Ohishi summoned one samurai and said,
しかし、大石内蔵助は一人を呼びつけて言いました。
" Go away and live to record what happened for the future generation."
「 逃げて生きのび、後世につたえよ 」と。
Ako samurai were rewarded as Tokugawa Shogunate confiscated Kira's residence and territories.
吉良一族は屋敷と領地を奪われ、浅野内匠頭の無念が晴らされます。
Captured 46 samurai had harakiri next year.
とらえられた46名は、翌年、切腹。
Japanese people love this historic story very much.
